I walked into the kitchen, flipping on the light. I glanced at the granite countertop, admiring the large feature in the center of the room. Focus. I reminded myself to head straight for the freezer. I had stocked it with several pint size containers of Häagen-Dazs chocolate ice cream and it was time to dig in. The smooth chocolate was my one weakness. It was a vice my mother had tried to get rid of on numerous occasions. So much so that I had to hide the ice cream at the very bottom of the chest freezer when I was living at home. It wasnât something that I could give up completely, though I had scaled back for the sheer fact that it was getting harder and harder to hide from my mother.
Thankfully I didnât need to hide my addiction any longer. My midnight clandestine dates with Häagen-Dazs was a new habit. I had eaten it to my heartâs content around my roommates, but for some reason I couldnât bring myself to eat so much in front of my new husband. I just didnât trust him yet.
Since I wasnât going to change anytime soon, I pulled out the cold container, not waiting before tearing off the lid. I grabbed a spoon and jumped on the countertop that had been calling my name since the first time I rested my eyes on it, then pushed myself to the center of it. I laid back on the hard stone just to test my theory. And I had been right. My whole body fit the length of this countertop. My legs didnât even dangle over the edge. I had no idea why anyone would need an island this big, but I was thankful for it now. I was sure I would get a lot of use out of it. Maybe not for the reason it was meant for, but use all the same.
I pulled a pint of ice cream onto my chest and dug the spoon into the thick chocolate, then put the spoon into my mouth, making sure to savor the chocolate silk. As I pulled the spoon from my mouth, I closed my eyes, humming at the deliciousness on my palate. As far as vices went, this one really couldnât be compared to anything better.
As the chocolate melted on my tongue, I thought back to the events of the last week. Edward had contradicted himself at every turn and I couldnât quite figure him out. It was almost as if he expected me to fight him on all of his little demands. The one thing I did know how to do was take care of a household. It was what I was raised to do. Be the perfect wife. The perfect hostess. The perfect housekeeper. It had been drilled into me since birth, almost as much as finding a wealthy man to marry. It had been neck and neck with winning the next pageant. The thing was, I liked those things. And I was good at them.
